America DV Visa Lottery- Is It For Real?

The America Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV) program also known as the green card is an immigration visa lottery issued by the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) which allows lucky winners to live and work in the United States as a permanent resident.

Annually the DV program issues 50,000 immigrants visa to random applicants from eligible countries with historically low immigration to the US.

The DV program is a government anchored program issuing visas to qualified candidates. The American DV program is legal and not a scam, however, there are many non-governmental sites masquerading as officials of the U.S government to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Who Is Eligible

You must first confirm your eligibility before proceeding to register for the DV program, your eligibility hinges on education, work experience and country.

Work experience and Educational qualification

You must satisfy the educational and work experience criteria to be eligible for the DV program. You must have a high school education or it’s equivalent or two years of relevant work experience in a qualifying occupation within the past five years.

The U.S Department of Labor’s O*Net Online database is used to determine relevant work experience.

Countries

Countries with historically low immigration records to the U.S are eligible. Natives of select countries in Aisa, Africa, Europe, Oceania, Central America and the Caribbean are eligible. The list of eligible countries is subject to change without prior notice from the U.S government. Visit the  Dept of State official website for comprehensive information.

You were born in an ineligible country—but neither of your parents was born in or legal residents of that country at the time of your birth—you may still qualify, assuming one of your parents was born in an eligible country.

Registration Portal

The registration for the DV program is done online and the application must be done in English. It is pertinent you read and follow the instructions carefully to avoid regrettable mistakes. all required documents must be submitted. When To Register

The DV online portal opens between Oct. 1 till Nov. 3 every year. It is advisable you register on time due to high traffic which is prevalent at the end of the sign-up period. Late entries will not be considered as well. DV-2019 Entrants have until September 30, 2019, to check the status of their entry for 2020 through the lottery’s website.

Guard Against Fraudsters

The worrisome trend of fraudsters prying on unsuspecting victims is worrisome and applicants are advised to be extremely careful. Any information about the Dv lottery should be sourced from the official website and there is no fee attached. Discard any mail or phone calls claiming you have been selected without recourse to the official website of the U.S Dept of State.

Additionally, you should be aware of the following salient points:

  • The DV lottery draws is automated and random winners are selected
  • There is no registration fee
  • Find out if you have won by visiting the official DV lottery site (Winners are usually announced beginning May 1)
  • You will be required to pay an application fee in person at the U.S embassy if you are among the lucky winners.

Note: Winning the green card lottery does not result in your automatically getting a green card. It means you have won the opportunity to apply for one.
